The Paso Fino is a breed that is over 500 years old. Originally Colombus's fleet, on the second voyage, carried a selection of Spanish Horses including the Jennet (now extinct - a naturally gaited horse), the Barb and the Northern Forest Horse (pre-cursor to the Andalucian). These horses bred and the subsequent - gaited -progeny became known as the 'horse with the fine step'. They are virtually the gaited cousins to the Andalucian.
In addition to the fabulous gliding 4 beat gait (essentially a walk at speeds of up to 22 miles per hour), they can troche, trot, canter and gallop.
We are specialising in the more refined Paso Fino, with fine gait and elegance. Over 500 years nature has got it right with bone density etc; and they are really work animals – used to carrying loads, weights and crops. They have tremendous stamina, and are amazingly sure-footed across difficult terrain. As a famous Colombian trainer once said ‘When you’re on the side of a mountain and the way is blocked you want a horse that can turn on a peseta!’ Their refinement belies their strength.
Well, theyre not fantastic jumpers - but they do everything else! From carriage driving to long distance, pleasure riding to dressage, letrec to show - the great thing is that we can show and compete across some disciplines; and the show circuit is building up. Many of the gaited horses show together + we can show with the Spanish Breeds etc. Once you meet a Paso Fino you will understand what we mean!
They are related but a different breed. The Paso Fino has a straight up and down action as opposed to the 'termino' or swinging action in the front legs of the Peruvian. Horses for courses as they say
They are a very adaptable horse; remember in South America and Montana it gets very very cold. Our stallion, Ingeniero lived in the deep cold of the Montana winters without a rug! Remember they are hardy 'native' horses. Some shelter in the rain and wind as normal for any horse.
We love to use the South American 'traditional' tack as it always stops people in their tracks but most importantly a lot of the tack is best suited for the horse. We ride without bits wherever we can.
Yes they do; but only in the USA; and they are well cared for. Its just like Christmas when your horse arrives from a flight!
